Ask anyone who runs the rivers here what water is, and they will tell you it is alive. The Kichwa word is yaku, and it means far more than the thing that fills a glass. Yaku is a being with moods and memory, to be respected and thanked. You feel the truth of that the first time a rapid lifts your raft and the whole river seems to breathe beneath you.
