Ask anyone who runs the rivers here what water is, and they will tell you it is alive. The Kichwa word is yaku<\/em>, and it means far more than the thing that fills a glass. Yaku is a being with moods and memory, to be respected and thanked. You feel the truth of that the first time a rapid lifts your raft and the whole river seems to breathe beneath you. Adventure at Hacienda Primavera begins with that kind of respect, and it ends each evening back at a warm table with a good story to tell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Rivers with a spirit of their own<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The rivers near us, the Gualch\u00e1n and the Mira, run down from the high p\u00e1ramo into the forest, gathering speed and character as they go. Depending on the season and how bold you feel, you can ride gentle, playful water or take on lively rapids that guides grade as Class III and Class IV. Runs last anywhere from a brisk forty minutes to a full three hours. First timers are always welcome and never thrown in cold. Your guide explains every stroke and every signal and stays close the whole way down. It is worth knowing that yaku amu<\/em>, in Kichwa, means something close to water spirit or lord of the water. Once you have felt the river, the name makes perfect sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The saddle and ninety years of memory<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is no better way to understand the shape of this land than from the back of a horse. Our family has worked these hills for close to a century, and the trails we ride were carved by daily life long before they ever carried a visitor. They climb through pasture and forest edge to lookouts where the valley opens beneath you and the cloud pours slowly over the peaks. Beginners and confident riders are both at home. Along the way your guide might point out a medicinal plant, a passing bird, or the far snow of the mountains, and share the old names for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Waterfalls, trails and a word about the mountains<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Between the big adventures, the forest itself is the reward. Guided walks lead to hidden cascades and clear pools where you can swim, passing bromeliads, orchids and, if you keep quiet, the animals that live here. Trails run from easy ambles to steep climbs that test your lungs at altitude, so you choose the effort that suits the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local people have always treated the high mountains as elders. The great volcano that watches over this province, Taita Imbabura<\/em>, is spoken of as a grandfather, and there is a tender old story that when snow dusts the neighbouring peak of Mama Cotacachi, the two have spent the night together. When you ride or hike here, you move through a landscape that people have loved and named and told stories about for a very long time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adventure here is never only about adrenaline. The Intag valley that spreads west of us is known for its strong community spirit, its small organic coffee growers and the warm thermal pools of Nangulv\u00ed, where you can ease tired muscles after a day on the trail. Many of the guides who lead you are neighbours whose families have farmed and walked this land for generations, and travelling with them is the surest way to understand it. Ask them about the plants, the weather signs and the old paths, and you will learn things no guidebook will ever tell you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
