A rich heritage in the heart of RIO BLANCO
History of Hacienda Primavera
Hacienda Primavera’s history begins around 90 years back when a husband and wife bought the Hacienda…
Hacienda Primavera is a family-owned and operated retreat, lovingly managed by a husband-and-wife team. With over 90 years of history in our family, we take great pride in preserving its charm and heritage. Nestled in the northwestern tropical montane forests of Ecuador, the ecolodge is located within the breathtaking El Chocó National Rainforest Reserve, northwest of Quito. The climate remains pleasantly stable year-round, with daily temperatures ranging from 18°C (68°F) to 24°C (80°F), ensuring a consistently comfortable experience for our guests.
The ranch is a blend of primary and secondary jungle, home to stables filled with horses, cattle, llamas, donkeys, goats, and pigs. Surrounded by a thriving tropical cloud forest, the area boasts rich biodiversity, with abundant flora, fauna, and a remarkable variety of birdlife. Situated at an elevation of 1,200 meters (approximately 3,500 feet), the lush cloud forest is teeming with life, featuring dense biomass and an array of epiphytic orchids, bromeliads, ferns, and mosses. The towering tree canopy reaches heights of 25 to 30 meters (75 to 90 feet), creating a breathtaking natural spectacle.
The indigenous tribes living near the ecolodge are historically known as the Aguases. Archaeological discoveries in and around the Hacienda date back more than 400 years, offering a glimpse into the region’s rich past. The nearby villages are home to montañeros, indigenous people with a distinct Spanish colonial heritage. Often referred to as the modern-day cowboys, montañeros are highly skilled in horseback riding, ranching, and farming, carrying on a proud tradition of working the land.
